Well Said!

When I was a student at Kent State I took a class that was called something like  “Communication as Art”. One of out assignments was to keep a journal of favorite quotes and word combinations. I still have it. It’s been some time since I added to it, but I do from time to time.  I also find I look to it for inspiration. A friend noticed I have some quotes on the front page and wondered why I don’t change them up from time to time since I have lots of favorites. Frankly, it’s ‘cuz I’m lazy. I thought about adding a post from time to time “quote of the week.” but does that commit me to writting something once a week? UG. So… I here is a new page. A quote a week, a quote a day.. lots all at once, or nothing new for months on end. We’ll see how it goes….

” Jails and prisons are designed to break human beings, to convert the population into specimens in a zoo – obident to out keepers, but dangerous to each other. ”  – Angela Davis

” I speak from Pennsylvania’s death row, a bright, shining, highly mechanized hell. In this place, a dark temple to fear, an alter of political ambition, death is a campain poster. In this space, and in this time, in this dark hour, how many of us are not on death row?”  – Mumia Abu-Jamal

” It is not desirable to cultivate a respect for the law, so much as for the right. The only obligation which I have a right to assume is to do at any time what I think is right. ”  -Henry David Thoreau

Having been a person who was beaten into submission, quieted, stunned, and made mute by terror, I know that there comes a time when you get people back – because that’s survival. It’s an organic part of what violence does. So I don’t believe in the perpetration of it anymore”    (Eve Ensler)

It is not good enough to be right. Sometimes, if only in order to test our resolve, it’s important that we win something. In order to win something, we need to agree on something. That something does not need to be an over-arching, pre-ordained ideology into which we force-fit out delightfully fractious argumentative selves… It could be a minimum agenda. “   ( Arundhati Roy)
