Today, June 27, is National HIV testing day.
According to http://www.napwa.org/public/programs/nhtd.php, The National Association of People with AIDS (NAPWA) started National HIV Testing Day (NHTD) in 1995. Every year, on June 27th, local organizations across the nation engage with communities to promote early diagnosis and HIV.
It has been more than 2 decades since we first became aware of HIV and AIDS, and yes – much has been accomplished, but there is much more to do! More federal funding is needed, more education in schools and elsewhere would help, needle exchanges, affordable health care for everyone, the list goes on.
One thing that will not help: ignoring it.
Donate to some of the many groups doing good work on the issue. Educate yourself and others. Get tested….
And remember, HIV Testing Day is just one day out of the year, and many organizations offer free testing year round that is confidential, quick and free of judgment. So even if you missed out on today’s festivities, you haven’t missed your chance.
