Happy Birthday Malcolm X

Malcolm X, slain champion of human rights, would have been 83 years old today, May 19 2008.

Named Malcolm Little by his parents, Malcolm X was born on May 19, 1925 in Omaha, Nebraska. Malcolm’s father, Earl Little, was an outspoken supporter of the Black Nationalist Marcus Garvey.

In 1964 he made a pilgrimage to Islam’s holy city, Mecca, and adopted the name El-Hajj Malik El Shabazz.

The memory and image of Malcolm X has changed as much after his death as his own philosophies changed during his life. At first Malcolm was thought to be a violent fanatic, but many now understand him as an advocate of self-help, pride, education and justice.   A philosopher, seeker,  and pedagogue, as well as a talented speaker his life was impactful and inspirational.

Some of his own words to inspire:

If you’re not ready to die for it, take the word “freedom” out of your vocabulary

I do believe that there will be a clash between East and West. I believe that there will be a clash between those who want freedom, justice and equality for everyone and those who want to continue the systems of exploitation. I believe that there will be that kind of clash, but I don’t think that it will be based upon the color of the skin….

You can’t have capitalism without racism.
