Happy Season of Nonviolence!

January 30th marks the beginning of the Season of Nonviolence.  Started in 1998 to commemorate the 50th and 30th anniversaries of the assassinations of Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr., the season officially runs between January 30 and April 4. It is an opportunity to celebrate nonviolence, and consider and act in ways that lead us to live in a more just, and peaceful way.

Obviously, there are many many ways to do this. As my friend Amy often reminds me, Gandhi called nonviolence an “experiment in truth.”  Let’s get experimenting!

  1. I wonder if I tell you or express to you often enough how amazed and warmed by your presence in this world? That I am comforted by your never-ending strength and ethusiasm?

Tonight I am watching primary election returns. I’ll remain silent about who I voted for— but I will say this— I am struck tonight that I am no longer a girl in college naively looking out at the world, but instead, an adult who wonders what will be left for the world one day in my absence. ..

You are a bright star and I am proud of you. Thank you for reminding me of the anniversaries. I shall think of this and think how and then implement ways to celebrate.

    I love you.
